Cai Guo-Qiang: Penglai / Hōrai

We are pleased to present this special exhibition, Cai Guo-Qiang: Penglai / Hōrai as a part of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015.

Cai Guo-Qiang is one of the most prominent Chinese contemporary artists, noted worldwide for the fireworks display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Cai has been deeply engaged with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale since its inaugural festival in 2000. This year, his artworks appear in Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015 followed by solo exhibitions Cai Guo-Qiang: There and Back Again at Yokohama Museum of Art, and Cai Guo-Qiang: Penglai / Horai at the Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art / KINARE.

Here Cai presents a large-scale dynamic installation laced with humour and ironies. Invoking as a metaphor Penglai/Horai, the legendary island in ancient Chinese mythology where immortals were believed to reside, the installation responds to its theme of “islands”, which have been a source of tension amongst countries in East Asia, drawing attention both within and beyond Japan leading up to the 70^th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War this summer. Approximately 1000 objects made of straw, created with the help of children under the guidance of local straw masters, will be laid around the island in the form of a dragon. With its realization engaging people and places spanning national borders, the installation, in short, shows the true worth of his artworks.

Cai Guo-Qiang and Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale

Inspired by the guiding concept of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Cai transported an ascending kiln (or “dragon kiln”) from China to the Mountain Park area of Tsunan township, Niigata Prefecture in 2000 to form the “Dragon Museum of Contemporary Art (DMoCA).” As a director of the DMoCA, he has invited and curated prominent artists including Kiki Smith (2003), Kotaro Miyanaga (2006), Jennifer Wen Ma (2009), Ann Hamilton (2012) and Peter Hutchinson (2015).

Cai Guo-Qiang

Born in Fujian Province, China in 1957. After completing studies at the Department of Stage Design at Shanghai Theatre Academy, he lived and created artworks in Japan from 1986 to 1995 when he developed the basis for his current signature artworks through experimenting with the expressive potential of gunpowder and explosions. Cai was awarded the Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Biennale (1999), the 7th Hiroshima Art Prize (2007), the 20th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (2009), and 24th Praemium Imperiale – Lifetime Achievement in the Arts (Painting) (2012). Paying attention to the relations between cities and agricultural communities, Cai has converted unexpected spaces into small museums including the Dragon Museum of Contemporary Art, DMoCA (Niigata, Japan, 2000), UMoCA (Italy, 2001), BMoCA (Kinmen Island, Taiwan, 2004), and SMoCA (Fukushima, Japan, 2013). Cai is one of the most significant contemporary Chinese artists and curated the first China Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005 and directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic in 2008.

About the Museum

The museum was originally opened as the Echigo-Tsumari Exchange Centre during the 2003 Triennale and re-launched during the 2012 Triennale as the Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art / KINARE. The permanent collection is inspired by the topography and history of the Echigo-Tsumari region – its snowy winters and the Shinanogawa river watering its rich soils and deciduous forests, which have in turn nourished a rich cultural landscape, ranging from ancient Jomon pottery and traditional villages, to the tunnels and infrastructures of today, this museum aims to encompass the entire region, providing a platform for the region and landscape to connect to the contemporary world.

北京オリンピック開会式の花火の演出でも知られる、中国を代表する世界的アーティストの蔡國強さんは、越後妻有とは大地の芸術祭初回から深く関わられてきました。戦後70年の夏、蔡さんは、東アジアが緊張状態にあるなか、今、最もリアルで、国内外の関心が集まる「島」をテーマに、古代中国で仙人が住むといわれた東の海に浮かぶ伝承の島（山）「蓬莱」をメタファーとして、ダイナミックかつユーモアとアイロニーあふれる大インスタレーションを展開します。島の周囲に龍のように配置された藁細工は、地域の匠たちからその技を学び、越後妻有のこどもたちとともに作り上げた約1000体にもおよぶ協働の作品。世界各地で、地域と協働しながら、国を超えたプロジェクトを次々と実現する蔡さんの真骨頂とも言えるインスタレーションです。
